Can you help us?
Volunteers urgently needed!
Crocheters & Knitters:
As we are a new organisation, we do not yet have squirrel related products for our online store. This is where you come in! If you are a dab hand at crocheting and/or knitting, and would be willing to donate your finished works of art, we would love to hear from you! We have patterns we could provide for crocheting/knitting clothing, handbags, purses and so forth. We'd love to hear your suggestions too!
Please also get in touch if you are also a dab hand at amirugami!
Please contact us for our PO Box address for delivery of the finished item, or for personal collection in and around the London area.
Rehabbers:
If you have experience as a squirrel rehabber then we would love to hear from you! We would be looking to link members of the public with local rehabbers, to administer first aid to the squirrel, whilst trying to liaise with rescue centres for a possible placement for said squirrel. This can sometimes can a day or two, which is where you come in!
Vets:
If you are a registered vet and work in, or own a veterinary practice specialising in small mammals such as squirrels, please get in touch! Due to the legal situation with grey squirrels, we would be looking to link you up with rescue centres who have a licence to keep grey squirrels, so that you are legally able to treat the greys in need.
Grey Squirrel Rescue Centres:
If you hold a licence to keep grey squirrels anywhere in the UK then please get in touch. Even without a licence or permit, you are still allowed to keep grey squirrels for up to 6 weeks. In this case, the grey squirrel could be placed with you on a temporary basis until a permanent placement is found.
Homeowners with garden space or land:
If you think you would be interested in applying for a licence to keep grey squirrels then please get in touch! We would be able to guide you through the process, and seek donations to cover any application costs, including the purchasing of, and installation of, any outdoor squirrel enclosure. This is a major way how we can help UK grey squirrels until the law is changed. At present, there are only a limited number of rescue centres with licences to keep grey squirrels, and with it being illegal to release greys back into the wild (in most cases), places quickly become full. When this happens, the only option for a grey squirrel sadly, is euthanasia. Grey Squirrel Protection UK strives to expand the current number of extremely limited places available for UK grey squirrels, by assisting potential applicants with licence applications, and with the purchasing of outdoor squirrel enclosures.
Film Makers:
If you have experience in film making we would love to hear from you! A series of documentaries on the life of a grey squirrel, would go a long way in bringing the lives of these magical and inquisitive critters more into the public domain. Just as there are a series of documentaries on the internet regarding the life of a particular squirrel in Sweden (an adorable red squirrel and a tearjerker of a documentary!), a similar story following the life of a grey needs to be made too. Such a documentary is long overdue.
Fundraisers:
If you have any fundraising suggestions (or any other suggestions), then we would love to hear from you!
The vast majority of organisations are informing the public that grey squirrels cannot be released if they are trapped, and that they must be killed. This is false. If the squirrel is trapped (for example, in a bird feeder, on your property, or in netting in a park), free it. The law still permits freeing grey squirrels and releasing them where they were found. www.rspca.org.uk/adviceandwelfare/wildlife/squirrels/injured
